New Hospital Development Expanding in City

New York area hospitals are about to get a lot bigger with millions in new construction projects in the works. Plans include a 500,000 square foot expansion project at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, construction of a new $11-million maternity ward at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital in Washington Heights, and Winthrop-University Hospital's newly announced $11-million project to build a CyberKnife Radio surgery center near Lincoln Center.

New York Methodist Hospital is Expanding

New York Methodist Hospital announced a project that will involve tearing down 15 period buildings between Seventh and Eighth Avenues to make room for its new U-shaped, seven-story expansion to its campus near the Park Slope historic district.

The institution filed plans with the Board of Standards and Appeals to construct a new 500,000 square foot, 152 feet tall building on residential streets now dominated by four-story townhouses.

Although the project will add 1,023 new parking spaces to the area, the community will have to endure a four year construction phase. Understandably, residents of Cobble Hill are not happy.

Presbyterian Hospital to Build New Maternity Ward

New York-Presbyterian Hospital has filed an application to construct a maternity ward in the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital located on its Washington Heights campus.

The $11.4 million renovation will create 16 new inpatient single rooms, six high-risk single rooms, one isolation room and one bariatric room on the 10th floor of the Central Building at 3959 Broadway.

In addition, ten existing patient rooms will be converted into new labor and delivery rooms. The proposed construction will start July 17, 2014, and last until Aug. 26, 2015.

CyberKnife Center Comes to Manhattan

Winthrop-University Hospital has filed a certificate-of-need to expand into Manhattan from its home in Nassau County to offer CyberKnife robotic surgery treatment services.

The $11 million project would be built at 150 Amsterdam Ave. Winthrop Urology is already is established in Manhattan, and Winthrop-associated surgical practices also have offices in the city, so expanding CyberKnife to Manhattan represents a natural extension of its services to patients in New York City.

Radio advertising for CyberKnife services is everywhere during rush hour, and for good reason—attracting new patients’ drives profitability at the $10 million-plus facility. And with its high-density population, Manhattan is an ideal site for offering the service.

CyberKnife is a noninvasive treatment for certain types of tumors and lesions. Treatments take a maximum of five days at 30 to 40 minutes daily.
